Chapter 10
Later that night, I leaned my head against Liamâs shoulder. We were on the couch, and I was tucked under a throw because it had been chilly when we got home. After Liam had started a fire, we snuggled up on the couch to watch television.
My goal had been to turn my brain off, yet I couldnât stop thinking. Too tired to cook, weâd picked up a pizza on the way home and eaten it in the kitchen before meandering over here.
âI thought you said you didnât want to think,â Liam murmured, his gruff voice sending a little shiver through me.
Youâd think, having known him my entire life, that Liam wouldnât have such an easy effect on me. No such luck. Or perhaps I should consider myself lucky, seeing as I was destined to marry him, or else the fate of two powerful witch families might be thrown back into conflict.
I found it hard to believe that a marriage every generation between the sprawling Good and Wicked families was actually necessary for us to maintain the peace. Yet a look back at the history to see how bad things had been once upon a time was eye-opening.
All I had to do was take a gander at the strong-willed personalities that dominated the witch world. I didnât know how the spell kept the peace between our families, but it seemed to work. Just thinking about Opal Good throwing her powers up against my father was enough to make me worry.
Shifting back a little, I glanced up at Liam. âYouâre right. I canât stop thinking. I guess Iâm relieved multiple spells were used at both the beach and at Beaconâs Charm because then it makes sense. Yet it still worries me. While we might be suspicious of Clint, heâs got no magic whatsoever. So either heâs being used as a pawn by someone and he doesnât know it, or something else is going on. I just canât figure out the purpose of breaking the spell on the lighthouse and the shipwreck on the shore. Also, why didnât Jacob tell us when he went to the beach?â
Liam smiled slightly. âI knew that would bother you, but you know Jacob. Heâs never been one to keep everyone up to date. He also likes to ponder things forever.â
I leaned over, snagging my glass of wine from the coffee table and taking a healthy gulp. âI suppose one thing thatâll keep me from worrying is how much stuff I have to do in the next few weeks. Charm Fest is coming up quick, and weâve got a ton of stuff to do. You sure you donât mind helping?â
Liamâs grin widened, and he shrugged. âI donât mind work. Plus, Iâm fairly sure everyone would fall over dead if we didnât help. Itâll be fun. You just tell me what to do.â
As he held my gaze, his eyes darkened, the icy blue warming.
âSo I can just tell you what to do?â I teased.
âAnytime.â
âKiss me then.â
Proving his point, he obliged.
