Chapter 10

Later that night, I leaned my head against Liam’s shoulder. We were on the couch, and I was tucked under a throw because it had been chilly when we got home. After Liam had started a fire, we snuggled up on the couch to watch television.

My goal had been to turn my brain off, yet I couldn’t stop thinking. Too tired to cook, we’d picked up a pizza on the way home and eaten it in the kitchen before meandering over here.

“I thought you said you didn’t want to think,” Liam murmured, his gruff voice sending a little shiver through me.

You’d think, having known him my entire life, that Liam wouldn’t have such an easy effect on me. No such luck. Or perhaps I should consider myself lucky, seeing as I was destined to marry him, or else the fate of two powerful witch families might be thrown back into conflict.

I found it hard to believe that a marriage every generation between the sprawling Good and Wicked families was actually necessary for us to maintain the peace. Yet a look back at the history to see how bad things had been once upon a time was eye-opening.

All I had to do was take a gander at the strong-willed personalities that dominated the witch world. I didn’t know how the spell kept the peace between our families, but it seemed to work. Just thinking about Opal Good throwing her powers up against my father was enough to make me worry.

Shifting back a little, I glanced up at Liam. “You’re right. I can’t stop thinking. I guess I’m relieved multiple spells were used at both the beach and at Beacon’s Charm because then it makes sense. Yet it still worries me. While we might be suspicious of Clint, he’s got no magic whatsoever. So either he’s being used as a pawn by someone and he doesn’t know it, or something else is going on. I just can’t figure out the purpose of breaking the spell on the lighthouse and the shipwreck on the shore. Also, why didn’t Jacob tell us when he went to the beach?”

Liam smiled slightly. “I knew that would bother you, but you know Jacob. He’s never been one to keep everyone up to date. He also likes to ponder things forever.”

I leaned over, snagging my glass of wine from the coffee table and taking a healthy gulp. “I suppose one thing that’ll keep me from worrying is how much stuff I have to do in the next few weeks. Charm Fest is coming up quick, and we’ve got a ton of stuff to do. You sure you don’t mind helping?”

Liam’s grin widened, and he shrugged. “I don’t mind work. Plus, I’m fairly sure everyone would fall over dead if we didn’t help. It’ll be fun. You just tell me what to do.”

As he held my gaze, his eyes darkened, the icy blue warming.

“So I can just tell you what to do?” I teased.

“Anytime.”

“Kiss me then.”

Proving his point, he obliged.
